The Vietnamese swimmer finished first with a time of 4:18.10 to take a gold medal. His new record was more than two seconds better than the 4:20.65 he set at the previous Games in the Philippines. The two teams (number 1 and 2) of the Philippines both got a 2-0 win over Singapore to grab the overall win in the curtain-raiser of the men’s division. Thailand had to edge out Malaysia 2-1 in the conclusive third match to ink their first win in the qualifying round. Oanh finished first in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9min 52.46sec, setting a new Games record. Reigning champion Oanh separated from the pack from the first steps. She made an outstanding solo burst for the finish line, leaving all others far behind. Oanh was surprised looking at the electric board and found that her result was a new record. "I could not believe it is a record," Oanh told the media. "I am so happy with this result.
