Winning 13-5 against their Cambodian rivals in the semifinals, Thai Thi Hong Thoa and Tran Le Lan Anh claimed an emphatic 13-2 victory over Malaysia’s Nurashimah Senin and Sharifah Aqilah Farhana Syed Ali to top the event. “I’m very happy to earn my team the first precious gold medal,” Thoa told reporters after the match. “I’d like to thank my coaches and family for this victory.” Head coach Dang Xuan Vui said he hopes the gold medal will be a source of motivation for the team to achieve good results in the coming games. The Thai player kept her momentum from the first and second rounds as she earned 5-under-par and 10-under-par. The two teams (number 1 and 2) of the Philippines both got a 2-0 win over Singapore to grab the overall win in the curtain-raiser of the men’s division. Thailand had to edge out Malaysia 2-1 in the conclusive third match to ink their first win in the qualifying round. Việt Nam's world champions Phùng Thị Huệ and Đào Hồng Sơn secured their titles in the women's 45kg and men's 56kg categories, respectively, at the Đan Phượng District Gymnasium. The team completed their target of two golds in the SEA Games. In the first two matches, Team Vietnam 2 beat Cambodia 2 - 0 but Team Vietnam 1 lost 0 - 2 to their Cambodian opponents, leading to a golden set where the hosts earned a 2 - 1 win. He finished the combined 10km running, 40km cycling and 5km running with a time of 1hr 55.57 min on Tuần Châu Island, Quảng Ninh Province. Thanh Hà Hà came from behind to beat Singapore Ong Shu Hui Jessica 15-11 in the thrilling final match to take the first individual title of her career. Ong took lead from the beginning the match, opening massive attacks on the host athlete and creating a gap of points between the two fencers. However, Hà step-by-step gained points and eventually overcame Ong. "I am happy because it is my first individual SEA Games title. I had to work and play hard to earn it. My rivals were really strong. I want to give it to all of my coaches, teammates and supporters," said Hà, who returned to training just eight months ago after maternity leave.
