A teenage Palestinian girl who was filmed kicking and slapping an Israeli soldier in the occupied West Bank accepted a plea deal on Wednesday under which she will be sentenced to eight months in prison, her lawyer said. Ahed Tamimi, 17, became a hero to Palestinians after the Dec. 15 incident outside her home in the village of Nabi Saleh was streamed live on Facebook by her mother and went viral. The soldiers had deployed during a weekly Palestinian protest in the village against Israeli policy on settlements in the West Bank, one of the most heated issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Tamimi was 16 at the time of the offence. Her trial began last month and she faced 12 charges, including aggravated assault. "No justice under occupation!" Tamimi, handcuffed and shackled, shouted out to reporters at court in the Ofer military prison, near the West Bank city of Ramallah. Tamimi's attorney Gaby Lasky said that under the deal approved by the court, Tamimi will plead guilty to a … [Read more...] about Palestinian teen on trial for striking Israeli soldier agrees plea deal

No room on water, no home on land for Cambodia’s ethnic Vietnamese
Truong Van Long is Vietnamese in name only. He was born in Cambodia and has lived there for decades, including many years in a floating house on the Tonle Sap lake where he still lives. But his days on the water are numbered. Citing concerns over pollution and overfishing last year, Cambodian authorities have moved hundreds of ethnic Vietnamese families in the central province of Kampong Chhnang to land. More than 1,000 ethnic Vietnamese families, including Truong Van Long’s, who are still on the water will be relocated to land in the coming months, provincial authorities have said. "Why move us from the water? We are not in anyone’s way, and there is nowhere else for us to go," said Troung Van Long, seated on the floor of his blue-colored houseboat. "The officials say we are polluting the water, but it is industries and city people who do that. We just want to make a living from fishing - we will starve if we are moved," he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Indonesia’s GDP to rise 4.9 percent in 2019: Moody’s
Illustrative photo (Photo: dailynewssegypt.com) Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to grow by only 4.9 percent in 2019, 0.4 percent lower than the set target, Moody’s Investor Service has said. According to Moody’s, the Southeast Asian nation’s GDP will further decline to 4.7 percent in 2020, and is expected to slightly recover to 4.8 percent in 2021. Moody’s managing director and chief credit officer Michael Taylor said the decline in commodity prices and the US-China trade war have caused negative effects on Indonesia’s economy. According to Moody’s analyst Tengfu Li, the decline in commodity prices correlated closely to the banking sector, making it one of the key risks to Indonesian banks. Meanwhile, Moody’s vice president and senior credit officer Jacintha Poh said the GDP slowdown as well as weak commodity prices — especially for palm oil and coal — will also affect the earnings … [Read more...] about Indonesia’s GDP to rise 4.9 percent in 2019: Moody’s
Hanoi publicizes sex workers’ hangouts
Some members of the public commented that they would care more about the publication of government officials' assets. Others said officials can list all the streets they want, they were not going to stop the world's oldest business. While commercial sex services are still illegal and considered a social evil, a national debate on reforming this policy has thus far been inconclusive. However, the fact that the National Assembly actually debated legalizing prostitution signaled a significant shift in perspective. The locations publicized by Hanoi authorities include several streets, a park and a bus station in the districts of Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Hoang Mai, Bac Tu Liem and Ba Dinh. Sex workers usually stand around in the area waiting for customers or drive around on motorbikes looking for them, said Tran Quang Thuc, head of Hanoi's Social Vice Prevention Office. He also named 10 other places suspected of hosting the service in Hoang Mai, Ha Dong and Thanh Tri Districts. Suspected … [Read more...] about Hanoi publicizes sex workers’ hangouts
