Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Cô Ba Sài Gòn (The Tailor) won the Best Feature Film at the Golden Kite Awards in Hà Nội yesterday. The Tailor, which beat other 13 nominees, is a romantic comedy featuring the culture and lifestyle of the Saigonese as well as the history of the áo dài (Vietnamese traditional long dress). It stars Ngô Thanh Vân, Ninh Dương Lan Ngọc and veteran actresses Diễm My and People’s Artist Hồng Vân and is directed by young talents Lộc Trần and Kay Nguyễn. Future Shorts film festival returns
Viet Nam News Future Shorts, the largest short-film network in the world, will present the best local and international short films at Saigon Outcast on June 24. The screening programme will feature acclaimed works, including 2016 BAFTA-winning short animation Edmond directed by Nina Ganzt, and drama Leidi by director Simon Mesa Soto, awarded Short Film Palme d'Or at 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It will include works by Vietnamese directors like Down the Stream by Mai Huyền Chi and Tạ Nguyên Hiệp, and The Funeral Singer by Thanh Hoàng. Nuoc (2030) wins the best film at the San Pedro Int’l Film Festival
(Cinet)- ‘Nuoc 2030’, directed by Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh, won the best feature film award at the San Pedro International Film Festival in the US. The movie is a science-fiction thriller set in the near future in southern Vietnam, where global warming has affected the people. The movie is set in the 2030s in Vietnam when the water levels have risen due to climate change, causing as much as half the farmland to be submerged. People have to live on houseboats and deal with a depleting fish supply. Huge multinational conglomerates compete to build floating farms to produce the needed vegetables that have become highly priced commodities. The movie 2030 follows a young woman in her journey to find the truth about floating farms. She ends up finding different truths about her husband's death and has to make a dramatic decision. Student wins laptop in short film contest
HCM CITY — Nguyen Van Thanh, a fifth year students at the Ha Noi University of Industrial Fine Arts, won the first prize of a contest that had students make short films around the theme of sustainability. Thanh won a Sony Vaio laptop for his short animation work, which he called Nature Balance. The cartoon portrayed a dark future that resulted from humanity's continued exploitation of the environment without enough attention to the need for sustainability. The HCM City Academy of Theatre and Cinema's Vu Khac Vien, a member of the jury that awarded the prize, said last week at the awards ceremony that Thanh's video was a vivid portrayal of the results of a single-minded focus on economic growth.
