Nguyen Thi Oanh, one of Vietnam’s most elite professional athletes, has overcome both mental and physical obstacles to rise to the top of the Vietnamese sporting scene. Oanh made history at the 32nd Southteast Asian (SEA) Games on May 9 when she became the first athlete to secure gold medals in both the 1,500m and 3,000m women’s hurdling events. Just three days later, Oanh found herself once again atop the podium when she brought home another gold medal in the women’s 10,000-meter race. She claimed a total of four gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games, hosted by Cambodia from May 5 to May 17. Oanh, affectionately known in the Southeast Asian running scene as the 'runner without lungs,' is one of the most decorated athletes in the history of the event. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - A ceremony was held at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on May 31 to send off Vietnamese athletes with disabilities competing in the 12th ASEAN Para Games , which is scheduled to take place in Pnom Penh, Cambodia from June 3-9. Led by Nguyen Hong Minh, Deputy General Director of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s Vietnam Sports Administration, the delegation consists of 164 members, including 122 athletes. The Vietnamese athletes will compete in eight out of 13 sports at the tournament, namely track-and-field, swimming, weightlifting, badminton, table tennis, chess, judo, and boccia. Weightlifter Vo Van Tung brought home one of the golds in the men’s F34 event. The two others were earned by weightlifter Truong Bich Van in the women’s F56 category, and Trinh Cong Luan in the men's F56 javelin throw. As of 4:30pm on June 6 – the third official competition day of the Games – the Vietnamese team won eight golds. Previously, Tran Van Nguyen, Nguyen Thi Hai and Ngo Thi Lan Thanh also claimed gold medals. Defense ministry honors military athletes participating in SEA Games 32
Attending the ceremony were leaders of the General Department of Political Affairs and the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army; Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong; Director of the General Department of Physical Training and Sports under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Dang Ha Viet, among others. President hails athletes for performances at SEA Games 32
The 32nd edition in Cambodia marked the first time in history that the Vietnamese contingent, despite not being at the host position, had topped the tally with 136 gold, 105 silver, and 118 bronze medals, broken 12 records, and set four new records. At the meeting, President Vo Van Thuong and other leaders presented the second-class Labor Order to runner Nguyen Thi Oanh, who seized four gold medals at the games; and 37 third-class Labor Orders to other athletes for their excellent performances. Over 1,450 athletes to compete at ASEAN Para Games 12 in Cambodia

Among these athletes, the largest contingents are from Thailand with 304, followed by Indonesia with 275, and the host country Cambodia with 252. There are also 128 athletes from Vietnam, 83 from Myanmar, 43 from Laos, 26 from Singapore, 20 from Brunei, and 13 from Timor-Leste. Track-and-field athletes to vie for medals at Asian Championship in Bangkok
"We have registered 16 athletes and six coaches to participate at the Thai Asian Championship. The final list will be announced later," said Nguyen Manh Hung, General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation. Among participants are SEA Games champions Nguyen Thi Huyen, Nguyen Thi Hang, Nguyen Thi Oanh and Luong Duc Phuoc. After the Cambodian SEA Games, Huyen took a gold in the women's 400m hurdles at the Taiwan Open last week. Hang won in the women's 400m while Phuoc was a champion in the men's 1,500m at the same event.
