On Monday, more than 55 chefs divided into 11 teams participated in an event to process hundreds of coconut-based delicacies in Ben Tre to set a world record in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Vietnamese cultural celebrity Nguyen Dinh Chieu (1822-1888), whose hometown was Ben Tre. The delicacies are made from different parts of the coconut tree, including coconut palm heart, shredded coconut, desiccated coconut, coconut milk, coconut water and sprouted coconut. Nguyen Thi Be Muoi, vice chairwoman of Ben Tre, said this was a great pride of Ben Tre people and the world record helps to promote its culture and tourism image to international visitors. Currently, Ben Tre is well known as Vietnam's coconut capital and has more than 200,000 families growing coconuts, accounting for about two thirds of the total number of households in the province. Ben Tre boasts the largest coconut-growing area in the country at 74,000 hectares (182,800 acres). … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s 222 coconut-based dishes set world record

Hoi An among world’s best places to visit in July
"As the monsoon rains fall in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, savvy travelers in Vietnam head to the central coast where the weather is dry and warm," the magazine said. Hoi An, a 400-year-old town that used to be the busiest trading port in Southeast Asia in the 16th century, is an ideal place where tourists are able to step back in time, it said. "In Hoi An, lantern-strewn streets reveal Chinese temples and ancient tea-houses." Once a convergence point for Chinese traders, it's not difficult to see ancient temples and assembly halls with a touch of Chinese architecture that worship red-faced General Quan Cong (Guan Yu), an eminent figure in the Three Kingdoms legend and China’s ancient civil war. Time Out also suggested visitors leave Hoi An and laze on the stretches of white sandy beaches around Da Nang before conquering Hai Van Pass on a motorbike tour, and visit Hue’s Imperial Citadel that used to witness the ups and downs of Nguyen Dynasty, Vietnam’s last royal family. (AFP/GERGELY BOTAR) The Treaty of Trianon, signed in Versailles, France, in 1920, defined the country's new frontiers after the dissolution of the defeated Austro-Hungarian empire. Hungary was not only forced to sign away vast swathes of territory, but also half its multi-ethnic population. Church bells rang out around Hungary for 100 seconds at 4.30pm, the exact time the treaty was signed. In Budapest public transport was halted and many observed a minute's silence, while other commemorations took place nationwide. The treaty meant that at a stroke, more than three million ethnic Hungarians - or Magyars - became part of neighbouring states, along with key economic resources and cultural sites. Although during World War II Hungary temporarily took back some of the territory with Nazi Germany'S help, the borders have remained unchanged since 1947.
