Ngo Van Quoc, 39, will be jailed for eight years and three months, a court in Thua Thien – Hue Province announced Thursday on two charges of "asset appropriation" and "appropriating and illegally using military weapons." Vietnam sees sharp hike in petrol prices
The retail prices of fuel products in Vietnam were revised upward starting from 4:00 pm on Thursday, with each liter of the popular RON95 gasoline soaring nearly VND900 (US$0.03), according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Biofuel RON92 now sells for VND24,190 ($0.99) per liter, up around VND720 ($0.02), while the popular RON95 rose by VND870 ($0.33) per liter to VND25,740 ($1.05) from VND24,871 ($1.02). The prices of oil products were also adjusted up. Diesel oil is offered at VND23,590 ($0.97) per liter, up VND540 ($0.02). The price of kerosene is capped at VND23,810 ($0.97) per liter, rising VND630 ($0.02) while that of heavy fuel oil is VND17,840 ($0.73) per kilogram, inching up VND140. During this fuel price adjustment, the ministry decided to tax each liter of most oil and petrol products sold by VND300 to replenish the national fuel price stabilization fund, except for heavy fuel oil. Tuna exports rise to year’s highest levels
VASEP said there were some changes in the export patterns in August. After declining steadily, exports to the U.S. increased by 2% bolstered by a 24% jump in shipments of canned tuna. But exports for the year-to-date were 45% down from 2022 at US$208 million. Exports to the EU saw a 37% surge, including a 45-fold rise in shipments to Italy. Smaller markets like Thailand and the Philippines also bought more tuna. Shipments to members of the CPTPP trade deal like Japan, Canada and Mexico fell by 53%, 49% and 14%. Mai Van Muoi, director of the Quang Nam Province Department of Health, said Thursday that of the 12 samples sent to Nha Trang Pasteur Institute, seven were found to have the two bacteria, both leading causes of food poisoning. But the department has yet to conclude if the bacteria were the main cause of the food poisoning suffered by the 150 diners, including 33 foreign tourists, last week. All have been discharged from hospital. Bacillus cereus was found in the samples of pork bologna while salmonella was found in char siu made from pork. Both were found in shumai and fresh vegetables. The bacteria cause high fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, and violent diarrhea. If not treated promptly, they could lead to dangerous complications and even death due to dehydration. Salmonella can survive in water for two to three weeks and in excrement for two to three months, but is destroyed within five minutes at 100 degrees Celsius or with common disinfectants.
