Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad (Photo: Bernama) Hanoi (VNA) – Malaysia on March 24 announced that the country may stop buying new fighter jets from European arms companies in retaliation against a plan of the European Union (EU) to curb palm oil use. The Southeast Asian country is the world's second largest palm oil producer after neighbouring Indonesia, and recently threatened to challenge the EU's plan to phase out the use of palm oil in biofuels at the World Trade Organization. In his strongest statement yet on the proposed curb, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said his country could look elsewhere to upgrade its air force fleet of Russian Mig-29 fighters, in effect abandoning plans to purchase France's Rafale jet or the Eurofighter Typhoon. He stressed that if the EU keeps on taking action against Malaysia’s palm oil, the country will think of buying airplanes from China or any other country. Mahathir's remarks come ahead of a five-day … [Read more...] about Malaysia threatens to boycott EU fighter jets over palm oil

She returned to Vietnam in August after Chinese authorities raided and deported undocumented immigrants. More about how she returned later. Cut to the present. In a countryside garment factory in the northern Bac Giang Province, Bien sits beside a bunch of red cloth bags. Around her dozens of other workers are making bags on sewing machines, but not Bien: Her job is to affix the company label on the bags, and she gets less than VND100,000 ($4.32) a day for it. She was given that job after failing to learn sewing despite eight days of training at the factory. "It's too difficult, I can't sew," she says. Before being trafficked to China, she had been quite resourceful, working her family's rice field in Dong Lo Commune in Bac Giang while also attending a babysitting class. On October 2, 1991, when she was 23, Bien … [Read more...] about The plight of human trafficking survivors: Back from hell but to what?

China has played a new trick with the "new map of the People's Republic of China", saying that the map was first published in 1951 and has just been "discovered”. The country constantly acts contrary to international laws in the East Sea. Foreign political observers have repeatedly warned that China has installed - possibly permanently - offensive weapons on artificial islands it illegally built in the East Sea. In 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping promised not to militarize the islands in Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago that his country built against international laws. Truong Sa includes the islands comprising coral reefs located east of the East Sea, adjacent to the main … [Read more...] about China and the decade-long lie about the East Sea story
