According to Southern Airports Authority and HCMC Transport Department, the parking lot aims to ease congestion along roads leading to the airport. So far, taxi drivers of both traditional and app-based services have parked on these roads while waiting to pick up arrivals due to a lack of parking space, Nguyen Minh Tuan, the authority's deputy head, told a city meeting Thursday. The proposed parking lot will cover in excess of 3,500 square meters, a third of a FIFA football pitch, near the route leading to the airport's international terminal. The state-owned lot is currently managed by the authority. Tuan said the number of international flights arriving at Tan Son Nhat has yet to reach its highest capacity under the impacts of the ongoing Ukraine war. In the near future, when those flights are recovered, more passengers will arrive. "It would be way too long to wait for the third terminal of Tan Son Nhat or the Long Thanh airport to be completed," Tuan said. More comprehensive solutions needed to retrieve traffic order in TSN Airport
Waiting for a taxi at TSN Airport on August 8 (Photo: SGGP) The Southern Airports Authority reported that the planned capacity of TSN International Airport is at 30 million passengers a year, but the airport in reality has served nearly double that figure. Particularly during this summer, TSN Airport each day accommodates 730 flights with 120,000 passengers on average. This high quantity has resulted in trouble of vehicle parking or pick-up and drop-off. Compared to the planned space for 6,000 motorcycles and 700 taxis, now the airport is welcoming 6,600 motorcycles and 4,500 automobiles in and out per day. Moreover, Truong Son Street is the only route to enter or exit the airport, not to mention it being the shortcut from Binh Thanh District, Go Vap District, and Thu Duc City to the downtown. Deputy Director of the HCMC Transport Department Phan Cong Bang added that surrounding roads were not built in accordance with planning, also leading to more pressure on Truong Son Street. … [Read more...] about More comprehensive solutions needed to retrieve traffic order in TSN Airport
A bumper summer for domestic tourism
Domestic tourism is on a rapid recovery after a two-year hiatus, but this sudden and rapid recovery also makes both tourists and workers feel tired. Tra My, who lives in Hanoi, took a trip to Dak Lak last weekend. My said it took her more than 40 minutes to check in and go to the airport, instead of the usual 15 minutes. “The airport becomes too crowded for the number of passengers that need to be served every day. Congestion occurs as soon as you reach the airport. Luckily, the flight was delayed for 30 minutes, so I was not late,” My said. A bumper summer for domestic tourism The same situation also tends to occur with road and waterway routes to some tourist destinations such as Quang Ninh and Haiphong. Minh Quan from Bac Giang shared that his family had to wait more than four hours to take the ferry from the mainland to Cat Ba island during a trip to Haiphong a few days ago. “Each large ferry can carry nearly 20 cars, and a small ferry can carry nearly 10, but … [Read more...] about A bumper summer for domestic tourism

Constant re-planning of transport projects in Vietnam
Illustrative photo. In a pattern that seems to have prevailed for years, a transport project is usually put into operation soon after its inauguration, but then within a short time there is a need for its expansion or upgrade. What is more surprising is that even projects that are still under construction are being reconsidered for expansion or an upgrade. Such as in the case of the Hanoi Highway which has been expanded four times and still not complete. It may be that this Highway may even be further expanded. The Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh to Dau Giay Expressway was started in 2009 with an original design plan of four lanes, then soon after increased to six lanes and now being considered for eight lanes. For all we know it may also be extended to twelve lanes soon. The 17 km long metro line 1 has not yet been put into a trial operation but is being considered for an extension to include the route to Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces. More recently, the 51 km long Trung Luong … [Read more...] about Constant re-planning of transport projects in Vietnam

China’s Hainan expands COVID-19 lockdowns to quell outbreak
China's Hainan, an island province dependent on tourism, locked down more areas on Monday, state media reported, as it battles its worst COVID-19 outbreak after seeing very few cases the past two years compared with many other regions in the country. The island in the East Vietnam Sea, which recorded just two local symptomatic COVID-19 cases last year, has reported more than 1,400 domestically transmitted infections this month, including 982 symptomatic ones. Although that is small by global standards, it is the province's biggest outbreak since the virus was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. The sharp increase in cases comes amid a pick-up in interest in tourism after China slightly eased curbs aimed at domestic travel, accounting for the shorter incubation period of the Omicron variant, which facilitates a shorter quarantine time. However, the curbs in Hainan, in line with China's "dynamic COVID-zero" policy that aims to stamp out outbreaks as … [Read more...] about China’s Hainan expands COVID-19 lockdowns to quell outbreak
