What are the topline points of the APEC summit most relevant to Vietnam? One of the key issues for Vietnam is how to come up with an action agenda for economic, financial as well as social inclusion. For many years we have looked at promoting open trade, free trade and globalization, but we know that there are people left behind in this growth, and we also see a concern around job losses and long term unemployment; so growth should be more inclusive. Irish and Vietnamese agri-food authorities will embark on a new phase of cooperation from 2023, Martin Heydon, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, announced at a trade mission in Hanoi last week. Ireland will work with Vietnamese and international counterparts to support Vietnam’s journey in transforming its food system. Over the next two weekends the grand finals of both the AFL and NRL will be shown live in bars across Ho Chi Minh City and Vietnam, and the games promise to be memorable in many ways. The regular meetings reviewed the implementation of projects within the IAI framework and suggested measures to improve the efficiency of the IAI Work Plan. The 68th IAI Task Force meeting drew the participation of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV), major beneficiaries of the IAI. Delegates spoke highly of the implementation of the IAI Work Plan IV from 2021-2025, with 12 out of 24 lines of action being launched in strategic areas of food and agriculture, trade facilitation, small and medium-sized enterprises, education-training, and community health. So far, 46 projects worth 4.87 million USD have been adopted. The IAI Task Force also adopted four new projects, bringing the total under the IAI World Plan IV to 50 with a total value of nearly 10 million USD. On September 18, ASEAN and US officials looked into the implementation of bilateral economic cooperation activities under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) and the Expanded Economic Engagement (E3) Initiative between the two sides for 2021 - 2022, along with the US’ technical support under the ASEAN - US Connect and the ASEAN - USAID Inclusive Growth in ASEAN through Innovation, Trade, and E-Commerce (IGNITE) programmes. VIR hosted the webinar " Buy Now Pay Later - The Future of E-commerce Spending?" to provide a platform for experts and business leaders to exchange ideas and discuss the potential of BNPL services in Vietnam’s e-commerce landscape. Speaking at the event, Nguyen An Son, head of the Project Development Department at the Centre for Informatics and Digital Technology, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, said that BNPL allows consumers the option to pay for purchases in interest-free instalments over a relatively short period. BNPL lenders rely on big data to assess the credit scores of customers. The larger the database, the more accurate the credit scores. He cited a report indicating that that Vietnam's overall online retail sales hit $13.7 billion in 2021. With a CAGR of about 20 per cent, Vietnam’s online retail sales are predicted to rise to $16.4 billion in 2022.
