January’s CPI increases 0.52% due to high Tet demand (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam ’s consumer price index ( CPI ) in January edged up by 0.52 % month-on-month, fueled by high consumer demand for the Lunar New Year or Tet which fell in the same month, the General Statistics Office said on January 29. In addition, the prices of goods, food and foodstuffs went up during the final lunar month to prepare for the longest annual holiday and domestic fuel prices rose to global levels, contributing to the rise of the index. This month’s CPI increased by 4.89 % year-on-year, while the core inflation in January inched up 5.21%. RoK tops list of countries with most foreign visitors to Vietnam
The Republic of Korea (RoK) topped the list of countries and territories with most foreign visitors to Vietnam in January 2023, the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) announced on January 29. Located in central Vietnam, UNESCO-recognised Hoi An is one of the major tourist attractions for Korean visitors. January FDI nears 1.7 billion USD
Vietnam attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) worth 1.69 billion USD as of January 20 this year, down 19.8% annually, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO). Among these projects, those related to wholesale, retail, and repair of automobiles and motorised vehicles accounted for the lion’s share of the total registered sum, at 54.1% or 651.9 million USD. They were followed by those in the processing and manufacturing industry, which together registered 351.2 million in capital. Inflation rises in January due to Tet effect
The effect was exaggerated by the fact last year Tet fell on February 1 and not in January, meaning prices remained low during the latter month. Another reason is that fuel prices have been rising to catch up with global rates, and a doubling of environmental tax on fuel to VND2,000 ($0.085) this year also pushed up the CPI, the General Statistics Office said.
