Infrastructure development to give southern region a push
Still the ‘engine’ of the country’s economic development, southern provinces have seen growth slowing down. After many years of waiting, Vam Cong, the second cable-stay bridge across the Hau River, after Can Tho bridge, has been put into operation. Analysts say that it would help the southwestern provinces improve their capability of connecting with HCMC and Cambodia. However, there are still many things that need to be done as the area now has only 11 percent of total highway length, though it makes up 55 percent of the country’s GDP. Hai Phong story Hai Phong City in the north is called a ‘rising star’. Many Vietnamese and foreign groups, including VinFast, Sun Group and BRG, have chosen the locality to set up their production facilities. Downtown toll can reduce traffic congestion losses: HCMC officials
Compared to an estimated congestion-caused loss of $6 billion every year, the annual mitigation would be worth $0.7 billion. The city can save about VND245 trillion in 15 years by reducing traffic congestion with toll gates for cars entering its downtown area, said Lam Thieu Quan, director of the Innovative Technology Development Corporation (ITD), which suggested the plan. The figure is derived from quantifying the benefits of less traffic congestion, he said. Traffic congestion is estimated to cost HCMC about VND140 trillion ($6 billion) every year through wasted time and fuel. Once the toll gates start functioning, vehicles would travel 10 percent faster and each driver and passenger on the road would save about 12 minutes which would have otherwise been lost in traffic jams. That means each driver and passenger would save VND40,000 ($1.7) per day, or $10.6 billion in 15 years (2020-2035). Quan said 10 percent of the city’s population use cars, while 80 percent use … [Read more...] about Downtown toll can reduce traffic congestion losses: HCMC officials

Electronics exports account for 50 per cent of the country’s total exports. – VNA/VNS Photo Vũ SinhViet Nam News HÀ NỘI – Việt Nam’s targeted growth rate of 6.7 per cent for this year may be too ambitious given both macro and micro economic conditions, said Nguyễn Đức Thành, President of the Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR) yesterday at a conference. Thành made the statement when he and his research team launched the Việt Nam Annual Economic Report 2016, entitled, “Forging new foundations for economic growth.” It is difficult for the country to reach its targeted growth rate of 6.7 per cent this year and an average growth rate of between 6.5 per cent and 7 per cent during the period 2016-20 due to a decline in … [Read more...] about Ambitious growth rate
