An additional 1,831 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Wednesday, raising the national tally to over 10.70 million, according to the Ministry of Health. According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in 48 out of 63 localities in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (403), Vinh Phuc (139), Phu Tho (125), Bac Ninh (80), and Nghe An (80). As of Wednesday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.70 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections. Hanoi reported the highest number of infections on the day with 419 cases, followed by Vinh Phuc with 119 and Phu Tho with 111. The national tally reached 10,699,965. A total 5,094 COVID-19 patients were given the all clear on May 17, bringing the number of recoveries so far to 9,364,857. Hanoi chairman, health minister face disciplinary actions over Covid test kit scam
According to a Wednesday announcement, the Party's Central Inspection Committee proposed to the Politburo, the Party's decision-making body, to consider disciplinary actions for the Party Committee of the Ministry of Science and Technology during the 2016-2021 period, the Party Committee of the Ministry of Health during the 2016-2021 period, Hanoi chairman Chu Ngoc Anh who served as the science minister during the period, and health minister Nguyen Thanh Long. Vietnam wins first-ever gold medal in SEA Games men’s marathon
Hoang Nguyen Thanh took home the gold medal in men’s marathon at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games on Thursday morning, the first-ever victory for Vietnam in the event. The marathoner finished the 42-kilometer race in two 2:25:7.84. Thanh’s gold medal is the 127th gold in Vietnam’s tally. On the same morning, Vo Xuan Vinh and Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuc claimed a gold medal in men’s and women’s 20km walk events, respectively. In the men’s 20km walk, the bronze medal also went to another Vietnamese athlete -- Nguyen Thanh Ngung.
