SAINT-MAGNE, France -- Firefighters from across Europe came to France's rescue on Friday to battle a massive wildfire, while fire also raged in Portugal and parts of England faced a severe drought, as successive heatwaves renewed the focus on climate change risks. Much of Europe has faced weeks of baking temperatures that have also depleted water levels of the Rhine River in Germany and seen the source of Britain's River Thames dry up further downstream than in previous years. High temperatures and a worsening drought brought a high risk of new fires breaking out in Gironde, in southwestern France, local officials said, even after an overnight reprieve held in check the wildfire that has been burning for days, scorched thousands of hectares and displaced 10,000 people. Qatar World Cup will be most luxurious yet, says hospitality firm boss
A company that sells exclusive FIFA packages to the well-heeled is predicting record sales for the World Cup in Qatar, but its owner insists the tournament will be "good value" for all fans. A 19-year-old college student from the northeastern province of Cao Bang was crowned the new Miss World Vietnam 2019 after beating out 39 beauty contestants in the pageant finale on Saturday night, becoming the first Vietnamese woman to clinch such a title. Luong Thuy Linh, born in 2000 in Cao Bang, was declared Miss World Vietnam in the finale in the central city of Da Nang, a victory allowing her to represent Vietnam at the oldest-running global beauty contest Miss World in the UK this December. Two other young women, Nguyen Ha Kieu Loan and Nguyen Tuong San, claimed the first and second runner-up titles and will represent Vietnam in Miss Grand 2019 in Venezuela and Miss Intercontinental 2019 in India later this year, respectively. Da Nang prepares to open beachfront parks to public
A new beachfront park on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street, which runs along the coast in Da Nang City, opened to the public this week as part of a larger plan to create more public beachfront spaces in the coastal city. According to the plan, three more beachfront parks are scheduled to open by the end of this year, and the city government is currently working with investors to build a public path to the Ngu Hanh Son coastal area. Public support for new parks For decades, Nguyen Van Tuan, 57, has spent his mornings cycling on Nguyen Tat Thanh Street and swimming at local beaches.
