ASEAN, Canada seek ways to foster partnership
Addressing the event, Assistant Foreign Minister and Head of SOM Canada Paul Thoppil affirmed that his country always attaches great importance to 45-year-ties with ASEAN, and underlined that ASEAN and the Southeast Asian region play a core role in the Indo-Pacific Strategy that Canada is going to announce. He said Canada hoped to engage deeper into regional cooperation through ASEAN-led mechanisms. Foreign groups battle to retain their workers
Inadequacies in salary are causing a shift of workers among foreign-invested enterprises. Taiwanese-backed Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone contract manufacturer, is complaining about a battle to attract more affordable labour with its Chinese rivals in Vietnam. Young Liu, CEO and chairman of Foxconn, this month accused the company’s Chinese competitors of setting up campuses near its base in Vietnam to get closer to its workers. Foxconn’s campus, located in the northern province of Bac Ninh, currently employs around 60,000 workers, and the company has plans to increase that number over the next two years. Once the battle for workers becomes more serious, the company may face the risk of employee shortages. Mechanical industry seeks solutions to access global value chain
Large market potential According to the Vietnam Industry Agency (VIA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), Vietnam’s mechanical engineering industry enjoys advantages in three main sub-sectors: motorcycles and motorcycle spare parts; household mechanics; automobile tools and parts. Specifically, domestic mechanical engineering enterprises such as VinFast, Thanh Cong, and Thaco now produce and assemble almost all types of vehicles including cars, trucks, and coaches. According to the VIA, domestically produced metal components have now met 85 to 90 percent of the motorcycle demand, 15 to 40 percent of automobile production needs, some 40 to 60 percent of agricultural and construction machinery, and about 10 percent of high-tech industry needs. ASEAN defense ministers meet with Japanese, Chinese counterparts
At the informal meeting between defense ministers of ASEAN and Japan, Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo affirmed that Japan supports ASEAN’s centrality in regional cooperation mechanisms. He suggested the two sides strengthen defense cooperation in the fields that are important to ASEAN, including improvement of maritime security, human resource quality, cyber security, and response to impacts of climate change on regional security.
