On a list of 10,000 universities in Asia from the Quacquarelli Symonds Education Organisation (QS) were seven from Vietnam in 2018, eight in 2020, and 11 in 2021. The top 500 in Asia in 2018 saw the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (HNU), the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM), the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Can Tho University, Hue University, and the University of Da Nang. Ton Duc Thang University and Duy Tan University were also added to the top 500 in 2019 and 2020, respectively. This year, three more Vietnamese universities were named among the 634 best higher education institutions in Asia by QS: the Hanoi Pedagogical University, the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City, and the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. The QS 2020 rankings by field have four Vietnamese universities in the global top 600: HUST, HNU, VNUHCM, and Can Tho University. VNUHCM and Can Tho University appeared in the rankings for the first time. The major of computer science and information systems at VNUHCM ranked in the 551-600 group globally. Can Tho University’s agriculture and forestry majors were in the top 251-300, while HNU saw the majors of maths, physics, astronomy, and computer science and information systems ranked. HUST had four groups of majors in the top 400 and 500, including electrical engineering - electronics, mechanical engineering, aviation and manufacturing, computer science and information systems, and mathematics. Among them, all three majors in the fields of engineering and information technology increased between 50 and 100 places compared to 2019’s rankings and remained at the …

He told the Dien dan Doanh nghiep (Business Forum) newspaper in a recent interview that 2020 was a year full of challenges and difficulties for Vietnam’s economy, including the agriculture sector, due to the COVID-19 crisis. The sector also had to face natural disasters, including unprecedented drought. The growth and trade targets for the sector last year were also the highest ever, with exports set at over 41 billion USD. However, Cuong noted, thanks to the efforts of the entire political system, ministries, sectors, localities, and economic elements, the agricultural sector managed to secure growth of about 2.65 percent and post export earnings of 41.25 billion USD, with nine groups of commodities enjoying shipments of over 10 billion USD. These were good results amid a market filled with fluctuations caused by COVID-19, the minister said, adding that the sector eyes growth of some 2.7-3 percent this year and exports of 42 billion USD. Meanwhile, the PM recently stated that agriculture offers important support for the economy, and set this year’s export target at 44 billion USD, which expresses his high expectations for the sector. The target is considerable but also feasible, according to Cuong. He quoted the PM as saying that the Government has been working to address issues relating to international markets, and with such efforts the country is confident of handling ties with major markets of Vietnam’s agricultural products. Vietnam earned about 3.49 billion USD from exports of agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products in January, up 27.1 percent year-on-year, data …

RCEP offers opportunity to expand Vietnamese agricultural exports

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership is expected to expand the market for Vietnamese agricultural products. — VNS Photo Văn Châu HCM CITY — The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world’s largest trade pact, offers Vietnamese agricultural exporters an excellent opportunity to increase their participation in global value chains, experts said. Lê Duy Minh, chairman of the Việt Nam Farms and Agricultural Enterprises Association, said the RCEP provides the country’s farm produce with access to a larger market and opportunity to improve their competitiveness. The trade deal brings together the 10 ASEAN member countries, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea, which account for 29 per cent of the world’s GDP and have a population of 2.2 billion. The trade pact promises to help increase Việt Nam’s exports since many of the other members have huge demand for its farm produce and processed foods. Thanks to the harmonisation of rules of origin between the members, Việt Nam’s exports could meet all the requirements to benefit from preferential tariffs in countries like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, Minh said. These countries also have relatively similar import standards and consumer tastes, not to mention the lower transportation and logistics costs they offer thanks to their proximity. It also opens new opportunities for trade with China in new categories such as communications, financial services, logistics, and e-commerce. Nguyễn Phúc Nguyên, general secretary of the Việt Nam Fruit and Vegetable Association, said the trade deal would further increase the country’s agricultural exports to China, already a major market. The RCEP removes tariffs on at least 64 per cent of tariff lines. In 15-20 years Việt Nam will abolish 89.6 per cent of tariff lines while its partner countries will remove 92 per cent of its tariffs. Other ASEAN members will remove 85.9 per cent of all tariffs …
