On August 5 one of two assistant teachers in a class, identified only as Thu, manhandled and threatened students before pushing the boy into a wooden cabinet and shutting the door. Her acts were caught on the school’s CCTV. Another child in the class told her mother, Le Mai Linh, about this, and she informed the boy’s family and the school. The head teacher and her two assistants apologized to the family. But they were fired by the school. Linh's daughter had told her she was "constantly pushed, pulled, and punished [in class] perhaps [because] she cries a lot since she just got out of hospital." Do Minh Dan, the boy’s father, said he "was deeply shocked when he saw the video and furious with both the teacher and her employer." He blamed what happened on the kindergarten for hiring incompetent staff. The boy reportedly shows no ill-effects or trauma and soon returned to school. Thu was a contract teacher who had started working a month and a half earlier. On … [Read more...] about Hanoi int’l kindergarten teachers fired for locking child in closet

Escalating trade war to hit Vietnam’s exports
"The trade war is going beyond analysts’ ability to predict and forecast. It poses big challenges to countries which trade with the U.S. and China, including Vietnam," Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Tran Quoc Khanh said at a recent meeting: Vietnam’s exports in the first six months rose 7.2 percent year-on-year, lower than the average growth of 11.6 percent in the last five years, according to customs data. RongViet Securities Corporation (VDSC) said in a newly-released note that export growth for the year could be 8 percent. It was 13.2 percent last year. The risk is even higher as China depreciates its currency to respond to the U.S.’s recent announcement of a tariff hike on $300 billion of its goods. The yuan slid to 7.0039 per dollar on Thursday as a result, the lowest level since April 2008. Economist Nguyen Tri Hieu said a depreciating yuan would pose a challenge to Vietnamese goods trying to enter China as cheaper Chinese goods will pour into … [Read more...] about Escalating trade war to hit Vietnam’s exports

HCMC should keep one-third of budget revenues for itself: chairman
In the 2016-2020 five-year period, Vietnam's largest city has been allowed to keep just 18 percent of its annual revenues and submit the rest to the national budget. "This is the lowest ratio in the world," municipal Chairman Nguyen Thanh Phong told the media on the sidelines of a city legislative council meeting last week. With a 30 percent retention, Tokyo of Japan ranks just above HCMC, and the highest belongs to Oslo, the capital of Norway, at 60 percent, Phong said. As the nation's commercial hub and biggest moneymaker, the city is working on a detailed plan to ask for permission to raise the retention ratio to 24 percent in 2021-2025, and 33 percent in 2026-2030, the ratio the city was granted back in 2003. This is needed for the city to ensure its stable development and continue to play its role as the nation's economic locomotive, making the biggest contribution to the national budget, Phong said. Including migrants, the megacity is currently home to 13 million people and is … [Read more...] about HCMC should keep one-third of budget revenues for itself: chairman
