Fifty-six lives were lost in the fire at the apartment block in Hanoi's Thanh Xuan District on September 12, and with them, all their dreams and ambitions, all the impacts they could have made on the world. How did it come to this? The owner of the apartment building has been arrested, and investigations are ongoing. Some people will need to be held responsible. Regulations for apartment blocks will be tighter. But somehow, I feel that all these solutions have yet to reach the root of the problem. Around 10 million people in Hanoi are crammed together in a tiny area next to the Red River. Traffic jams, inundations, air pollution, lack of trees, and now fires... these are just some of the problems that Hanoians have to cope with. The capital has lost its shine over the years. Rescuers have recovered the body of a 10th grader who was swept away by floodwater in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam after conducting a two-day search and rescue operation. Authorities in the province’s Quy Hop District completed procedures to hand over the body of the student to his family on Tuesday afternoon. My husband nitpicks over everything I cook
We got married 10 years ago. I actually fell for him because of how good he was at cooking and his good taste. He always knew where we had to go to eat and how to combine the dishes together to get the best taste, which impressed me a lot. But I did not expect that this would become a problem in our marriage. I have cooked most of the time since we got married, and my husband has assisted me whenever he is free. Since I come from a central province while my husband is from Hanoi, my taste preference is a bit different to his. We argue a lot because of that clash, and I get offended sometimes as he makes me feel like he is mocking me for my origins. Moreover, he often checks up on our grocery stock as well, and belittles me if there is any dirt left on the eggs or any rotten vegetables in the fridge. He also blames me if I cook too much or too little. He asks which ingredients I used if the dish does not fit his taste preference. Sometimes he criticizes what I cook even though … [Read more...] about My husband nitpicks over everything I cook
Vietnamese youth suffer from overthinking, anxiety
Thanh Tung dropped his major in marketing after pursuing it for a year and realizing it was not the right path for him. But for several months after switching majors, he’d been suffering from anxiety and insomnia over the decision. "I went to bed late, woke up at around 3-4 a.m., and could not go back to sleep until the morning. I had negative thoughts and cried a lot." The young man said he worried that his new major was just another "wrong decision." He felt like he didn’t have the energy to do anything other than lie down and surf his social media feeds. But this habit only compounded the problem from another angle. "Seeing so many talented people around my age on social media made me feel inferior," he said. "I felt like no matter what I do, I would never be as successful as them." Other aspects of his life had also been affected, including his relationships. Just a delay in the speed of his girlfriend’s text message replies made him wonder if she was tired of him or had … [Read more...] about Vietnamese youth suffer from overthinking, anxiety
I’m mad with my brother-in-law’s family
My husband is self-employed and he does not make a lot of money. I have to be the breadwinner of my family, and in addition to the debt we are having, we have to spend a lot for our kids’ hospital fees too, as they get sick very often. I do not only work, but also have to take care of the kids as well every time they get sick, since my mother-in-law refuses to help us as a result of our conflicting personalities. Now I have some problems with my husband’s brother too. My brother-in-law’s family sold their house here for VND3 billion and then relocated to the south last year. They used the whole VND3 billion to buy land piece at their new area, and asked my mother-in-law to sell her land slot to give them VND2 billion. They then used the money my mother-in-law gave them to buy a house and initially planned to operate a small business in it. But their business failed, they lost their investments, and returned here. The thing is they did not sell their house in the south. … [Read more...] about I’m mad with my brother-in-law’s family
