The AQUAM project delivers mangrove environment monitoring stations in critical water points in Ca Mau province. The monitoring stations operate on solar energy. Data gathered by the stations in combination with satellite images will be the input of environmental reports for all stakeholders. The project, funded by Australia’s Aus4Innovation program, was wrapped up on Tuesday in a workshop attended by local provincial authorities and representatives from the Australian Embassy. The AQUAM project, jointly developed and implemented by the University of Queensland and Green Field Consulting & Development Company, in close collaboration with Nam Song Hau Fishery Research Sub-Institute and Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, has installed 15 wireless environmental monitoring stations using IoT (Internet of Things) technology to monitor the health of the mangrove ecosystem. (Photo: VNA) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - The Mekong Delta is expected to have less flooding than normal this year, according to the Directorate of Water Resources. The delta, the country largest producer of rice, fruits and seafood, is normally flooded in the Mekong’s upstream areas, and this fertilises the soil as sediments are deposited and brings river creatures into farms. The floods are expected to peak at 3.5-3.7m at the Tan Chau Station in An Giang province in October, the directorate said. They are estimated to reach 3 metres by the end of this month, but will not affect the cultivation the autumn-winter crop. However, the high tides are expected to be high this year and flood low-lying areas in the delta’s central and coastal areas, especially when the tides occur at the same time as heavy rains. The Vietnamese Directorate of Fisheries required its subordinates in Ho Chi Minh City to verify whether a recently-circulated video capturing the release of an arapaima gigas that allegedly took place at a wharf in the city is true or not. Captioned 'Releasing 90-kilogram (198 pounds) arapaima gigas,' the 30-second video showed about 10 people on a boat returning a large arapaima back to the water. The location of the boat was believed to be at a wharf in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City. Arapaima gigas, also known as pirarucu, is an air-breathing fish that is native to the rainforest rivers of South America’s Amazon Basin and nearby lakes and swamps, according to National Geographic . Among the largest freshwater fish species, it can grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 440 pounds, though fish that big have not been reported for many years.
