Gunman kills 10 in live-streamed racial attack on New York state supermarket
An 18-year-old white gunman shot 10 people to death and wounded three on Saturday at a grocery store in a Black neighborhood of upstate New York, before surrendering after what authorities called an act of "racially motivated violent extremism." Authorities said the suspect, who was armed with an assault-style rifle and appeared to have acted alone, drove to Buffalo from his home several hours away to launch the afternoon attack that he broadcast in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com. Eleven of the 13 people struck by gunfire were Black, officials said. The two others were white. The racial breakdown of the dead was not made clear. Court papers named the suspect as Payton Gendron of Conklin, a town of about 5,000 people in New York's Southern Tier region near the Pennsylvania border. He was arraigned hours after the shooting in state court on first-degree murder charges, which carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without … [Read more...] about Gunman kills 10 in live-streamed racial attack on New York state supermarket
Tourism hit by lack of personnel after reopening
Foreign tourists visit the History Museum in HCM City on April 8. Photo baotanglichsutphcm.com.vn HCM CITY — Human resource shortages plague the tourism industry even as tourism, transport and other services are resuming, HCM City authorities said. Lack of human resources is a global problem for the tourism industry, and Việt Nam is no exception, Bùi Thị Ngọc Hiếu, deputy director of the city Department of Tourism, said. It has been a longstanding issue in HCM City and was only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, she told a workshop on May 13. Around 80 per cent of workers were laid off or moved to other industries during two years of pandemic restrictions, creating a huge worker shortage, she said. The city is a leader in training people in tourism specialities, and has 24 universities, 20 colleges and 19 vocational schools, according to Hiếu. More than 12,000 people graduate from them every year, meeting around 60 per cent of demand, she said. As of mid-April 454 … [Read more...] about Tourism hit by lack of personnel after reopening

‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack
An 18-year-old white man suspected of fatally shooting 10 people in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, appears to be the latest in a line of "copycat" gunmen carrying out deadlier mass shootings inspired by previous attackers, experts warned on Sunday. Payton Gendron, who surrendered to police on Saturday after the attack, apparently publicized a racist manifesto on the internet and broadcast the attack in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com. Authorities called the mass killing an act of "racially motivated violent extremism." Experts say the trend of mostly young white men being inspired by previous racist gun massacres is on the rise, citing recent mass shootings, including the 2015 attack at a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, a 2018 shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh and a 2019 attack at a Walmart in an Hispanic neighborhood of El Paso. Adam Lankford, a criminology professor at the University of Alabama, … [Read more...] about ‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack
Nation urged to prepare for tax overhaul
Last year, around 140 countries and territories agreed in principle to set up a minimum corporate tax rate-illustration photo, Source:Freepik.com At a conference on May 10, the Vietnam Association of Foreign-Invested Enterprises (VAFIE) released its first annual report on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country. One of the discussion points at the event was the topic of a global minimum corporate tax and its potential impact on Vietnam’s FDI prospects. Last year a landmark agreement was reached on a minimum global corporate tax rate of 15 per cent. However, the proposal is still in its early stages and getting the majority of nations to come to implemented it may take plenty more time. “Large corporations often choose to pour money into nations with good tax regimes and more incentives. If the global minimum tax of 15 per cent is applied, it will certainly have a big impact on businesses in Vietnam,” said Hong Sun, vice chairman of the Korea Chamber of Business in … [Read more...] about Nation urged to prepare for tax overhaul

Three great street soups in Da Lat
Your browser does not support the audio element. I confess I’m a soup lover, yet another reason for Vietnam to be at the top of my list of foodie destinations since there is no shortage of options day or night. The beauty is although the common Vietnamese soups share the same name and unique place of origin, the ingredients and preparation are different depending on local tastes in each region as well as what’s readily available and fresh. Da Lat is a destination that’s on nearly everyone’s list and the city features unique and delicious food, but, like anywhere, the best hideaways aren’t always easy to find. These places aren’t found in foodie blogs nor in tourist magazines – their success is strictly based on word-of-mouth. They’re makeshift, worn and old, a couple don’t even have addresses, and popular among locals but otherwise not well known. After lengthy searches and comparisons they are the best I’ve found at what they serve. Mi Quang Da Lat Style As most people … [Read more...] about Three great street soups in Da Lat
