Vietnam establishes diplomatic ties with Trinidad and Tobago

February 3, 2023 by tuoitrenews.vn

Vietnam officially set up diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, taking the number of countries that Hanoi has diplomatic ties with to 192.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassadors Dang Hoang Giang and Dennis Francis Smith, heads of the delegations of Vietnam and Trinidad and Tobago, respectively, to the United Nations (UN), signed a joint communiqué on the diplomatic tie establishment on behalf of the two governments at the UN headquarters in New York.

The two sides agreed to exchange diplomatic representatives at the ambassadorial level under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

On the same day, the joint communiqué was sent to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for circulation and to UN member countries for information.

With the diplomatic ties with Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam has had official diplomatic relations with all 35 countries in the Americas and 190 out of the 193 member countries of the UN, proving the country's policy of diversifying international relations and attaching much importance to the ties with Latin America and the Caribbean.

At the signing ceremony, Ambassadors Dang Hoang Giang and Dennis Francis Smith affirmed that the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Trinidad and Tobago will help open their cooperation in many sectors.

Smith said Trinidad and Tobago is an island country with the third-largest gross domestic product (GDP) in the Caribbean region.

He expressed his impression with Vietnam’s history and development achievements, saying that the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Southeast Asian nation is a milestone in Trinidad and Tobago's diplomatic policy.

The two ambassadors agreed to continue sharing information to learn about the strengths and potential of each other, especially in oil mining, tourism, and agriculture, and enhancing the cooperation at the UN and other multilateral forums.

Trinidad and Tobago consists of two main islands, namely Trinidad and Tobago, and more than 20 small islands. The country has an area of over 5,100 square meters and a population of about 1.4 million people in 2022.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Trinidad and Tobago's nominal GDP reached US$22 billion last year and its GDP per capita was nearly $18.000.
