Previously, on November 1, fishing ship QNg 90499 TS with 11 crew-members on board was hit by high waves and capsized and sank. Its two crew-members went missing while the other nine went adrift about 20 nautical miles off the North of Son Ca (Sand Cay) Island. By 7:00 a.m. on November 6, the nine distressed fishermen had been rescued and taken to Son Ca Island by fishing ship QNg 90671 TS operating nearby.

By 3:00 p.m. on November 24, Ship 421 of Naval Region 4 was sent to the island to take the distressed fishermen to shore.
Ship QNg 90499 TS was captained by Nguyen Van No from Binh Chau commune, Binh Son district, Quang Ngai province. The two missing fishermen are Tran Luong and Pham Van Sang.
