The Ministry of Health logged 16,067 more COVID-19 infections in Vietnam on Saturday, together with 1,668 recoveries and 148 fatalities.
The latest cases, including 15 imported and 16,052 domestic transmissions, were logged in 60 provinces and cities, the ministry said, adding that 7,160 patients contracted the virus in the community.
Tay Ninh Province recorded 3,676 of the local cases, Ho Chi Minh City 1,773, Can Tho City 954, Binh Duong Province 716, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 697, Dong Thap Province 604, Binh Thuan Province 562, Hanoi 310, Khanh Hoa Province 239, Ha Giang Province 165, Lam Dong Province 159, Bac Ninh Province 137, Thua Thien-Hue Province 106, Da Nang 66, Quang Nam Province 59, Hai Phong City 22, and Quang Ninh Province 15.
Vietnam had detected 13,094 locally-acquired infections on Friday.
The country has found 1,192,200 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave erupted on April 27. A total of 954,107 of them have recovered from COVID-19.
Ho Chi Minh City has been the biggest epicenter with 465,953 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 280,203, Dong Nai Province with 85,631, Long An Province with 37,865, Tay Ninh Province with 26,490, Tien Giang Province with 24,483, An Giang Province with 22,276, Dong Thap Province with 20,222, Binh Thuan Province with 15,049, Can Tho City with 14,866, Khanh Hoa Province with 12,464, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 13,038, Hanoi with 9,407, and Da Nang with 5,816.
Vietnam confirmed only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.
The health ministry announced 1,668 recovered patients on Saturday, taking the total to 956,924.
The toll has increased to 24,692 mortalities after the ministry documented 148 deaths on the same day, including 65 in Ho Chi Minh City, 11 in Tay Ninh Province, 11 in Binh Duong Province, nine in An Giang Province, and the remaining in 14 other provinces and cities.
Vietnam has logged 1,197,404 patients since the COVID-19 pandemic first struck it early last year.
Health workers have administered nearly 117.7 million vaccine doses, including 1,359,412 jabs on Friday, since inoculation was rolled out nationwide on March 8.
Over 69.3 million of the country's 98 million people have got at least one dose while upwards of 48.3 million are now fully vaccinated.
Health authorities target to fully inoculate 80 percent of the adults and 100 percent of those aged 12 to under 18 by the end of this year, according to a draft government plan for COVID-19 response in 2021-23.
