Ko Jin-young won the LPGA Tour’s BMW Ladies Championship in Busan on Sunday after a playoff with compatriot Lim Hee-jeong.
It is the 200th title won by a Korean player on the LPGA Tour.
Ko, who was trailing Lim by four strokes until the end of the third round, had eight birdies in the final round to tie for the lead at 22-under 266. With a birdie on the first playoff hole, Ko secured the title.
Starting with Ku Ok-hee in 1988, a total of 48 Korean players have managed to win 200 titles over 33 years. It took 24 years to reach the 100th victory by Ryu So-yeon in 2012, but it took only another nine years to reach the 200th.
Ko, who won the 197th, 198th, 199th and 200th titles, said, “There is no bigger honor or greater fortune to be the person to win the 200th title for Koreans in a competition held in Korea. I really wanted [Lim] to go to the LPGA Tour. I feel bad for her.”
Lim, who plays on the KLPGA Tour, could have secured a berth on the LPGA Tour if she had won the championship.
Ko is set to reclaim the world No. 1 position four months after losing it to Nelly Korda of the U.S., who did not compete this time. She is at the top of the points table for the Rolex Player of the Year award with 176 points ahead of Korda with 161 points.
Ko now has the most titles this season with four, and ranks fourth in terms of LPGA career titles among Korean players with 11, along with Shin Ji-yai, who now plays in Japan.
