This project is a collaboration among Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter to build a common way for people to transfer their data between online services. “The goal of this project has been to make it easier for services of any size to securely make direct transfers for data portability from one service to another and to make the process simpler for the people who use these services,” said Facebook in a blog post.
The Data Transfer Project aims to offer an open source platform that will allow users to move their data between online service providers whenever they want. “The project does this by providing an open source library that any service can use to run and manage direct transfers on behalf of users. Rather than expecting every company to build its own system from scratch, this open source framework allows them to share any improvements in the framework as well as adapters and data models,” it said.
Meanwhile, Facebook has launched a new market research app called Facebook Viewpoints. The app rewards users to take part in Facebook surveys, tasks and research. As per a company post on its newsroom page, these insights will be used to gather feedback not just for Facebook but other platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Portal and Oculus, which are owned by the company.
The app asks users to join various programmes and as part of each programme, it may collect information. The company claims that it will tell its users what information it is collecting before they enrol and how it will use this as well. On the basis of each programme, it will inform users how many points they receive and how many points are required to receive a payment. Every time a user reaches that level, they will receive a payment that will be directly sent to their PayPal account.
