Netflix is finished with its last two Marvel shows, canceling both The Punisher and Jessica Jones, bringing an end to a rocky relationship.
In a move that many saw coming, streaming giant Netflix has given Marvel’s The Punisher and Jessica Jones their walking papers.
According to Deadline Hollywood, the cancellation of both of these shows will effectively bring to an end Netflix’s partnership with Marvel, which started out with promise but has deteriorated over the past year.
For fans of Jessica Jones, the Krysten Ritter-led series will at least be allowed to run its third season. After that, it will be over and out for the series. The Punisher, though, didn’t get the same treatment, with Netflix announcing that the vigilante series starring Jon Bernthal will not have a third season.
Last month, The Punisher released its second season.
“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” the streaming service told Deadline Hollywood, adding that it appreciated the crew and cast who made the show a reality.
Netflix also threw in their consolation nugget to Jessica Jones, saying:
“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” also adding that they appreciated the people in front and behind the camera for their hard work.
That may be hardly consolation for the crew of both productions, who now will be updating their resumes. Though the cancellation of both The Punisher and Jessica Jones came as a disappointment to fans, it was a development in the making given the fact that the Netflix/Marvel relationship is effectively over.
Soon, all Marvel content will be available exclusively on the Disney+ streaming service (Disney owns the Marvel brand), and it’s not clear if both The Punisher and Jessica Jones will be revived for that service.
