The elements were kind to Ffos Las on Saturday, with plenty of sunshine and ideal good-to-soft going for the Welsh Champion Hurdle meeting, writes Jim Beavis.
A quality field lined up for the big race, and appropriately it went to a Welsh-trained horse.
The Swinton Hurdle winner Silver Streak moved smoothly into contention under Adam Wedge and jumped into the lead at the last. Evan Williams’s five-year-old grey continued the progress he made last season to win by three lengths and gave the impression there was still more to come.
Two Welsh runners fought out a thrilling conclusion to the 2m5f handicap chase. The Peter Bowen-trained Dr Robin led from the end of the back straight and looked a winner until running out of steam in the last half-furlong, and Dai Rees’s Gone Platinum ran on to join him on the line.
The photo revealed that Sean Bowen had managed to get Dr Robin to hold on by a nose. The jockey explained afterwards: “The horse has been plagued by stomach ulcers. He’s been called a few rude names in the past, but Dad was determined to get another win out of him. He has no finishing speed, he’s just a galloper.”
Evan Williams has had a couple of winners since. Still Believing followed up her recent Chepstow victory with success in a three-horse race at Exeter, and Court Royale opened his account over hurdles at Ludlow on Thursday.
Richard Johnson has been in flying form lately and one of his winners last week was Tim Vaughan’s Looksnowtlikebrian at Carlisle. He stays well and handles deep going, qualities which would make him a good candidate for the Welsh National. He could sneak in on a low weight. Vaughan was on the mark again at Southwell yesterday with chasing debutant Chozen, who made all the running and jumped well.
Atlantic Storm scored on his first outing for Dai Rees in a seller at Stratford on Saturday. The trainer bought him from one of Dan Skelton’s owners last month for £4,000. Rees has already got most of that money back and it will have been satisfying that the runner-up was another Skelton horse.
David Probert has a Group 1 ride at Doncaster on Saturday on Andrew Balding’s Dashing Willoughby. This is in the Futurity, formerly the Racing Post Trophy, a one-mile race for two-year-olds that often gives a guide to future classic form. He is reunited with the horse he rode to victory first time out. On form he has it to do, as his 20/1 odds indicate, but he has stamina in his pedigree and could be useful next year.
There’s racing at both Chepstow and Bangor-on-Dee on Tuesday, October 30. Thistlecrack made his novice chase debut at the corresponding Chepstow meeting two years ago.
Nominations can still be made for the first Welsh Horse Racing Awards, which take place at Chepstow Racecourse on the evening of Thursday, November 22. Categories include jockey and trainer of the year; best flat horse, hurdler and chaser. Contact Chepstow with your suggestions and the reason for your recommendations.
Last season’s champion conditional jockey James Bowen made the final shortlist of three for the 2018 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year, which was won by para-athlete Kare Adenegan.
Speaking about it at Kempton on Sunday, when he rode a double, Bowen said, “I wasn’t even expecting to be nominated and was very pleased to get as far as I did. Hopefully it’s been good for racing and I’m sure my parents are very proud.”
