Movie-goers can once again be transported to glorious Wakanda as Marvel smash “Black Panther” returns this week to the big screen.
Disney announced earlier this week plans to bring the $1 billion box office success back to 250 AMC theaters in the United States, offering free admission Friday through Feb. 7 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participating Iowa theaters include AMC Classic Johnston and AMC Classic Council Bluffs.
Shows run daily at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Free tickets must be reserved online via weticketit.com/blackpanther.
The free showings come in celebration of Black History Month, a Disney news release said. Disney plans to give $1.5 million to the United Negro College Fund “in furthering its mission to help minority students access and move to and through college.”
Despite invading theaters a year ago, “Black Panther” continues to catch award season buzz. The film earned seven Academy Award nominations, including best picture and best original song.

And it’s already brought home hardware. “Black Panther” won best ensemble cast at last weekend’s Screen Actors Guild Awards — the SAG-equivalent of best picture.
Can’t make it to the theater? That’s OK. It’s also available on digital platforms, DVD, Blu-ray and Netflix.
