Officials report that a 16-seater passenger bus, travelling from the northwestern province of Lao Cai to Lai Chau’s Tam Duong District, was apparently struck by a tanker truck in the opposite direction at about 9 a.m. While travelling across a bridge, the truck was supposed to have lost control, run over the divider and then collided head-on with the bus. The collision forced the two vehicles off the bridge and down into the mountain abyss. At that time, the bus was carrying 14 passengers, while the truck held only the driver. Do Ngoc An, chairman of Lai Chau Province, told Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper that the accident killed at least 12 people, including 11 bus passengers and the truck driver, while three bus passengers were listed as severely injured and are being treated at a local general hospital.
