UNR Med School to offer free vasectomies to men 18 and older

In what might be the most unusual freebie, the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is offering no-cost vasectomies.

The medical school known for offering free clinic days is branching out. Usually the school sticks to vaccinations, checkups and cold and flu treatments, but free surgery is a first.

The minor surgery that blocks sperm from reaching semen, preventing pregnancy, takes 15 to 45 minutes. The surgery usually costs between $500 to $3,000.

The surgery will be done by a doctor with medical students observing and assisting.

“It’s a great educational opportunity,” said Tessa Bowen, communications manager for UNR’s Medical School. She said it’s a simple surgery and compared it to neutering a dog or cat.

Dr. Daniel Spogen said men have historically had limited choices when it comes to birth control options.

“Family planning has focused more on women, women’s health, pregnancy and childbirth. Vasectomies offer a highly effective contraceptive option and allow men the opportunity to take on a greater role in their contraceptive responsibility,” said Spogen, chair of the school’s family and community medicine department.

Patients must be over 18 and should consider this surgery permanent.
