Seventy years ago, on May 9, 1945 German Field Marshal Keitel of Germany signed the surrender document to Russia and the Allied Forces. People around the world always remember the glorious victory of the Soviet people and Red army during this war, which is a victory of the advanced and democratic forces, and which helped maintain the independence and freedom of Russia as well as saving human kind from the threat of genocide. The victory affirmed Russia’s strength, and the advancement of socialism in all fields, including politics, economics, external relations and defense.
The victory also affirmed the outstanding talent of Russian generals and leaders, as well as the heroism of the people and army throughout 1,418 days of fighting.
The people of Vietnam and the wider world who strive for peace, always remember the sacrifices of the Russian people and Red Army, as well as their victory. The victory helped destroy colonialism, and served as a source of encouragement to the liberation movement of people in different colonies in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Various countries have gained independence and sovereignty in the subsequent two-three decades. The victory also created the opportunity for the Vietnamese people, under the leadership of the Communist Party and President Ho Chi Minh to stage the August Revolution in 1945 and create the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, a new chapter in the nation’s history, a chapter of national independence and socialism.
World War II was the fiercest war in history, which involved 76 countries and 1.7 billion people. Up to 60 million people lost their lives in the War, and up to 90 million others injured. The total cost of the war was US$ 1,384 billion and total loss was estimated at US$ 4,000 billion. Russian people suffered the most losses with 27 million fatalities, 30 million injured and thousands of towns destroyed.
Seventy years have passed, and World War II is history. But the significance of the victory, the lessons from history are still valuable. There are still plots and actions to rule the world by force, by modern weapons from aggressive forces. Religious, national and racial clashes and conflicts continue. Some forces continue to apply pressure on others, intervene in others’ internal affairs, and violate national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Those who seek peace and justice need to unite and fight for sustainable and long term peace on earth. We need to be vigilant to plots to rewrite history, as well as the creation of new forms of fascism. The sacrifices of those who died fighting against fascism need to be appreciated and remembered.
As a nation that has experienced a number of fierce wars, Vietnamese people fully understand the value of harmony and strive for peace, prosperity, happiness and development of all mankind. The world is changing, but the victory of World War II and the decisive role of Russia in saving mankind from fascism is a historical feat. Vietnamese people, together with peace lovers and the advanced forces of the world will protect and promote the value of the Victory of World War II.
