PANO – A high-ranking Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) delegation led by NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan recently attended the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). New parliamentary diplomacy channel for Vietnam
The Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, which was held for the first time on the occasion of the second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in New York, the USA, was seen as a forum for female speakers of parliament to exchange views and information, promote inter-parliamentary cooperation, discuss gender equality and issues relating to girls and women, and foster women advancement across the world, for international peace, development and prosperity.
Since then, the Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, with the participation of female leaders of the legislative bodies of nations, has become one of the most important global-scale forums to safeguard and promote women’s rights.
As Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan is the first-ever Chairwoman of the National Assembly during the country’s 70-year history, Vietnam has now been able to access this parliamentary diplomacy channel.
With the participation in the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament of the Vietnamese NA delegation led by NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Vietnam has officially joined international partners in a new multilateral cooperation mechanism, diversifying the country’s parliamentary diplomacy activities in particular and the country’s diplomacy channels in general. This has also been seen as a fruitful result of the Party’s and State’s policy on gender equality. With its participation, the Vietnamese delegation has contributed significantly to the success of the event as well as the common effort to ensure and promote women’s rights in the world.
Having known that Vietnamese NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan would have visited India before attending the 11th Global Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, former Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Governor of the Indian State of Manipur, Ms. Najma Heptulla, went a long way to New Delhi to meet the Vietnamese NA Chairwoman before Ms. Ngan would leave the country for UAE. The Governor of Manipur confided that she was eager to see the first Vietnamese NA Chairwoman. Ms. Najma Heptulla stressed that Vietnam is one of a few countries that have female leaders of their parliaments, believing that Vietnam will make a large contribution to promoting women’s rights and democracy for peace in the region and world.
