WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton has solid leads over Donald Trump in four key battleground states, according to new NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist polling.
The numbers suggest that she retains an edge in the race despite her most recent struggles to move past her email controversy.
Clinton leads Trump among registered voters by 44%-35% in Virginia, 43%-35% in Colorado, 44%-37% in Florida, 44%-38% in North Carolina.
The polls show Clinton is deeply unpopular — but that Trump is even more disliked by voters. Voters say by nearly two-to-one margins that they have unfavorable views of Clinton in these surveys, but Trump actually exceeds that mark. The two are the most unpopular presumptive presidential nominees in modern history.
Public polling should always be taken with a grain of salt, as it tends to bounce around a lot more than the race actually moves, and looked at in its entirety rather than at specific races. Other recent polls suggest that Clinton has lost a few points and has dropped into a close race with Trump at the national level. Other recent surveys indicate things have tightened up in some swing states, though the overall picture indicates that the race is still Clinton’s to lose as she remains ahead in most battleground polling. Quinnipiac University is the only reliable pollster which has found Trump ahead in any of the swing states.
The overall polling indicates that Clinton may be in better shape in the must-win states of the campaign than nationwide, possibly because she’s been able to spend so much more on TV ads than Trump in those states.
