Giovanna Fletcher has said that her husband, McFly singer Tom Fletcher, was more shocked about her recent post baby body-shaming incident, than she was.
The novelist was a guest on Friday’s This Morning to talk about the experience following a post she wrote about the weight comments went viral on the internet this week.
Giovanna, 31, explained how 30-year-old ‘Tom’s jaw dropped’ when his wife was told ‘Mummy’s still got her tummy’ by a fan of the boyband singer, 11 days after the birth of their second son, Buddy.

Speaking out: Following up her viral Instagram post, Giovanna Fletcher told This Morning on Friday about how her husband, McFly’s Tom Fletcher, reacted to the moment she was body-shamed by a fan
She explained: ‘Tom’s jaw dropped. I think neither of us could believe it was being said. And I know afterwards he came back home and spoke to his mum and dad about it, he was speaking about it more than I was.’
Giovanna, who is mum to Buzz, 23 months, and Buddy, two weeks, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share her experience, explaining her dismay after the woman pointed at her and said: ‘Oh look, Mummy’s still got her tummy’.
Tom and Giovanna were out for a family walk when he was stopped for a picture when she claims the woman ‘looked at me and laughed’ before making the comment about her bump.
After Giovanna declined the chance to be in the fan snap and held their newborn Buddy, the woman continued: ‘Ok maybe another time, when your face has slimmed down.’
Show of support: Giovanna says her husband Tom (left) was more shocked than she was after a stranger commented on the new mum’s weight 11 days after they welcome their second child
Body shaming: The mum-of-two described how the insult made her feel
Taking a stand: She warned people to be more careful about the way they talk about other people’s pregnancy weight
Via video link, Giovanna went onto explain how the post came about, revealing that the comments had made her feel proud of her body and not upset.
She continued: ‘The other morning I got out the shower dealing with my leaky boobs and putting cream in all sorts of places, and I was stood in front of the mirror, no make up on.
‘And what the comment did was made me look at my body and go “How do I feel about it? How do I feel about this new body that changed after having 2 children?”
‘Actually “It’s amazing” was my thought, and I just think bodies are miracles and the fact my body has grown two children in phenomenal. So I decided to share that.’
Defiant: Giovanna took to Instagram this week to hit back at the person who had made comments about her face and tummy when they were out walking
Calling out the comments: The author wanted to make light of the situation to empower other mothers and enlighten the commenter
Giovanna – whose brother is TOWIE star Mario Falcone – went on to say that the woman in question would no doubt feel ‘mortified’ to know that the incident caused upset, especially because she has children of her own.
She encouraged those with comments to be ‘a bit more careful,’ having previously said in her post that she was baffled at the stranger’s need to share the comment with her.
‘It’s not even after the baby, it’s during pregnancy as well. There are so many women out there who can’t have children and who would love to have, experience this body right now.
She echoed the sentiments that had featured in her lengthy social media post, which has been liked over 64k times, when she said that bodies were amazing.
Giovanna and Tom, who married in 2012, announced they were expecting their second child last year. The mum of two said: ”My bump will slowly go over time, but I’ll never stop being thankful to it’
Giovanna wrote beside the black and white mirror picture this week: ”Yes, I still have a bump. But that bump kept my little baby boy safe for a whole nine months. That bump has filled my world with even more love and light than I knew possible. That bump is a miracle worker…
‘My bump will slowly go over time, but I’ll never stop being thankful to it and my body for everything it’s given me. #spreadlove.’
Proving to be a big week for the star, Giovanna was subsequently ‘truly flattered’ to be named Celebrity Mum Of The Year by IceLolly.com on Friday.
On motherhood, she said: ‘I never think I’m doing anything right as a mum, but I don’t think any of us do. Sending out a big cheer to all the mums and dads out there who are simply doing their best!’

‘Take no notice, be proud as u say ur bump kept ur little safe and warm for 9 months, so it won’t disappear the minute u give birth. Stupid rude lady!’
Chloe Carroll wrote: ‘Carrying a baby for 9 months is the most rewarding thing to do . And most importantly it’s what our bodies are made to do! Beautiful words Gi! You are beautiful and we all love you.’
