Delegates also adopted seven lessons withdrawn from the 30-year reform while devising seven new orientations and tasks for the next period.

The Congress elected the 10th Party Central Committee with 69 official and eight alternative members, which then elected Bounnhang Vorachith as the Party General Secretary for the new tenure.

An 11-strong Politburo was elected, including Bounnhang Vorachith, Thongloun Sisoulith, Pany Yathotou, Bounthong Chitmany, Phankham Viphavan, Chansy Phosikham, Chansamone Chanyalath, Khamphan Phommathat, Saysomphone Phomvihane, Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune and Sonexay Siphandone.

The Secretariat groups nine members with Phankham Viphavan assuming the post its permanent member.

The Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission is staffed by nine members led by Bounthong Chithmany.

In his closing remarks, new Party General Secretary Bounnhang Vorachith said apart from some great opportunities ahead, Laos is facing a range of huge challenges to reach prosperity.
