AS part of its “#1Earth” environmental campaign and in support of the U.S. State Department’s efforts for ocean conservation, the US Embassy Manila has just launched Seeing Blue: A World Oceans Month Movie Series at the Exploreum, at SM Mall of Asia.
In partnership with National Geographic Channel Philippines, the Seeing Blue screening series features the documentary Alien Deep: Ocean’s Fury by Dr. Robert Ballard, an underwater explorer. Ballard found several lost ships, including the Titanic, the Bismarck, and the carrier Yorktown. He has also identified unique forms of marine life. In the film, Ballard searches for answers as to why the ocean seems to be getting bigger, angrier and more deadly.
Through this series of film screenings, the US Embassy aims to help the youth become more aware of the im-portance of caring for marine life and coastal environments. Thus, students from various coastal cities in Metro Manila such as Muntinlupa City, Navotas City, Pasay City, and Manila, who are part of the US Embassy Manila’s English Access Microscholarship Program were invited to the screening.
In his welcome remarks, US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg pointed out that the Seeing Blue ad-vocacy aims to teach the youth about some of the most pressing concerns of the Philippines; environmental is-sues; and combating climate change. He added that the youth must act to “protect, preserve and defend” the oceans for future generations.
After the movie and during the question and answer portion with the students, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Phil-ippines CEO and vice chairman Lory Tan highlighted that change is inevitable, but it should not be something to be feared. Instead, he said, the public needs to understand change to better prepare and adapt to it.
Joseph Foltz of the Office of Environment, Energy and Climate at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) also spoke about the US Embassy Manila’s “#1Earth” advocacy series, which aims to mobilize local com-munities to mitigate the impact of natural disasters and increase resilience to global climate change. He encour-aged the youth to join the Seeing Blue campaign, to make their own pledge for what they can do, in their own little way, to save the ocean, and to urge others to do the same.
Pledges can be shared on social media using the hashtags #iseeblue and #1earth.
