Group B is named the ‘death group’ with the presence of defending and four-time champion Singapore, three-time champion Thailand, Malaysia and qualifying round winners. Vietnam and Singapore will co-host the final stage from November 22 to December 20, while the qualification tournament will be held in Laos from October 8-19, with Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and Timor Leste competing for the two remaining finals slots. Vietnam is expected to excel at this year’s event, which will be Japanese coach Toshiya Miura’s debut at a large tournament as head coach of the men’s national football team. His predecessor, Phan Thanh Hung, failed at the previous edition two years ago as his team missed out on a semi-final berth. The AFF Suzuki Cup has been held biennially since it was first launched in 1996. In its nine-edition history, Vietnam claimed the title once in 2008 after winning the final match 2-1 against strong competitors from Thailand.
