Sony’s Morpheus: Here’s How Developers and Industry Veterans Reacted to Sony’s PS4 VR Headset

March 19, 2014 by www.dualshockers.com

Yesterday’s unveiling of Sony’s Project Morpheus Virtual Reality headset caused quite a stir in the industry, and quite a few developers and industry veterans posted their impressions, opinions, banter and even some intriguing information on Twitter.

Since it’s definitely interesting to hear the voices of those that might have to work on the new VR headset in the future, we gathered a healthy mix of those we could find, and you can read them all below:

Dave Perry, Gaikai CEO:

Super excited that Sony finally announced Project Morpheus. I’m a HUGE VR fan.

Mark Rein, Epic Games Vice President:

We’re excited to be supporting Project Morpheus! Congrats on the announcement tonight!

Raphael van Lierop,  Hinterland Games Creative Director:

Excited to hear about Sony’s Project Morpheus. More people with VR makes creating VR experiences more viable for us developers.

Dylan Jobe, Lightbox Interactive President:

OMG — Image of Richard Lee with move controllers taped to MacGyver-style VR headset wins for image of the week!

David Reid, CCP Games CMO:

VR is most a “thing,” in fact a thing to create virtual worlds more meaningful than real lifeTM

Andrea Pessino, Ready at Dawn CTO:

RIP Oculus Rift… we barely knew you. : )

Dan Olson, Treyarch Software Engineer:

Maybe it’s called project morpheus because it starts out really cool and then everyone’s tired of it by the third movie.

Jon Greenberg, NetherRealm Studios Graphics Programming Lead:

Prediction – Sony party features lots of people taking red and blue pills

Prediction – @amboyes wearing armless sunglasses at Sony party, and devrels dressed like Agents

Min-Liang Tan, Razer CEO:

Sony’s really hitting it out of the park over and over. Morpheus looks very cool.

John Carmack, Oculus VR CTO:

Trivia: I had suggested to Sony that they try to hire Palmer Luckey before the Oculus kick starter.

Calibrate PS4 VR expectations: a game that ran 60 fps on PS3 could be done in VR (stereo 1080 MSAA low latency 60 fps) on PS4.

That wasn’t sniping; I think PS4 is a great platform, sufficient to drive VR. People just need to understand the demands.

Dan Pearce, The Tall Trees Developer:

The Sony VR headset looks like a fancy butt massager. Okay I’m going to bed now.

Devin Reimer Owlchemy labs:

Sony’s VR announcement is great for people excited about VR. Completion is great for innovation!

Interesting overlooked item in the Sony VR announce is an extra box that will do the post-process for lens warping, performance win.

Todd Foster, Naughty Dog Artist:

Morpheus. I’m totally taking the blue pill.

I am going to strap a go-pro to my head and feed the video into my VR headset, and wear it around. It will feel like I am in the real world

Nathan Gary, Sony Santa Monica Creative Director:

They just showed a video of me playing the GoW VR demo. Lot of fun working with talented folks on that prototype.

Mario Lavin, Sony Santa Monica Lead Sound Designer:

3D Audio will sell the deal?…I’m beginning to like this concept!

And now to try bring back to life the oldschool Aureal 3D audio tech from the 90’s. I love history repeating : -)

Housemarque, Independent Developer:

Sony has presented Project Morpheus… Maybe we should ask for a dev kit

just to be clear: we don’t have one. We are not working on it. It’s just cool and we could totally try it out.

Adam Boyes, Sony Computer Entertainment Vice President of Publisher & Developer Relations:

I’m so glad I can finally use my “outside voice” about our VR – it’s been exciting to show it to devs over the past year.

Shahid Kamal Ahmad, Sony Computer Entertainment Senior Business Development Manager:

Yes, indies have been working with Project Morpheus.

The general reaction seems to be quite enthusiastic across the board, even if there are some rather relevant voices of skepticism. We’ll have to stand by and see just how far Sony will manage to push the Morpheus. One thing is for sure: the next few years are going to be quite interesting both for gamers and developers.
