Despite being led 1-0 five minutes into the game, U-19 Vietnam needed only eight minutes to restore the parity thanks to a cunning shot by Cong Phuong.
The following minutes saw absolute prevalence from Vietnam players. In the 17th, Van Toan cleverly lofted the ball over the Thai goalkeeper to put his team ahead 2-1 before completing his double 18 minutes later.
Thailand came back stronger in the second half with an 85th minute goal; however, it could not save them from an aggregate loss to the better performer Vietnam.
The well-worthy victory put Vietnam in second place of Group B, just behind the host Indonesia who crushed Brunei DS 5-0 in another group game the same day.
Vietnam is playing Malaysia tomorrow before taking on Indonesia, Myanmar and Brunei DS on September 14, 16 and 18, respectively.
The annual championship is taking place in Surabaya, Indonesia from September 9 to 22 with the participation of 11 teams in the Southeast Asian region. Vietnam is placed in Group B, the ‘death group’ that includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Brunei DS.
