Embassy representatives from ASEAN member countries gathered at a get-together in Ottawa, Canada on August 24 to celebrate the bloc’s 46th anniversary.
Those in attendance took part in various sporting activities including volleyball and tug of war. They also sampled many traditional dishes such as Vietnamese spring rolls and Indonesian gado-gado.
Held every year, the event provides a golden opportunity for ASEAN members to consolidate their friendship.
Embassies take turns to organise a sporting event, and this year Vietnam supervised the tug-of-war contest.
There are seven representative offices of ASEAN countries in Ottawa, namely Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Vietnamese handicrafts and gastronomy have attracted thousands of visitors at the Ottawa Tulip Festival held between May 1-18 in Canada, which Vietnam joined for the first time. According to Vietnamese Ambassador to Canada Nguyen Duc Hung, many people said they admired Vietnam ’s culture and its unique handicrafts and they wish to visit Vietnam in the coming time. The meeting will discuss future cooperation between ASEAN and the EU and the implementation of the Plan of Action on ASEAN-EU Enhanced Partnership which was adopted at an ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit in Singapore in November 2007. Delegates will also discuss regional and international issues such as the global and financial crisis, food and energy security, anti-terrorism, disarmament, climate change and epidemics. The meeting drew the participation of intelligence leaders of ten member countries. Participants discussed measures for boosting educational co-operation between ASEAN and China and approved a joint declaration to enhance these co-operative measures.Mr Luan said the success of this meeting will help to strengthen educational co-operation between ASEAN and China in general and between Vietnam and China in particular.
