HA NOI (VNS)– Viet Nam’s Nguyen Tien Minh breezed through to the quarter-final round of the Yonex OCBC US Open GPG badminton tournament early this morning in California.
The world No 9 defeated Malaysia’s Chun Seang Tan 21-11, 21-15 only after 21 minutes.
Minh, who is seeded third in the tournament, will play the winner of the match between American Sattawat Pongnairat and Antonio Benjamin Gadi of the Philippines.
On the women’s side, Vu Thu Trang of Viet Nam will face Salakjit Ponsana of Thailand later today. Trang yesterday trounced Christine Yang of the US 21-8, 21-1 in the first round. – VNS

Three Vietnamese will take their talents on the road when they participate in two European badminton tournaments this month.Ha Noi-based Le Thu Huyen, ranked No 271 in the women's world rankings, Do Tuan Duc, men's No 370, and Pham Hong Nam, No 1,300, will travel to Medvode City to compete at the Slovenian International on May 9-12.They will later participate at the Hellas International from May 16-19 in Greece's Loutraki City.Huyen and Duc will then join the national squad in Malaysia to take part in the world team badminton championship, the Surdiman Cup from May 19-26. — VNS... Vietnamese hopeful Nguyen Tien Minh yesterday advanced to the semi-finals of the World Badminton Championships after beating Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in a nail-biting three set match.The world No 7 won 21-8, 17-21, 22-20, in approximately 70 minutes, narrowly claiming the final two sets.Minh's victory is his first against Jorgensen after losing their previous two encounters.The result came as a surprise to Minh who expected only to reach the quarter-finals.In 2012, he lost 17-21, 21-19, 21-13 to Denmark's Peter Hoeg Gade in the quarter finals.Minh will face local favourite and Olympic champion Lin Dan of China in the semi-finals.…...
