VietNamNet Bridge – After the anchor wires of two barges were broken, the barges drifted uncontrollably and crashed on 44 houses along the Cai San River in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho.
According to the local authorities, nine houses were completely collapsed in the accident while 35 others were damaged, with a lot of furniture falling into the river.
According to authorities, the accident was cause by two barges which drifted freely after their anchor wires were broken by another sand barge running at high speed.
Most of the houses are low quality so the damage is estimated at only VND1 billion ($50,000). Fortunately, there are no casualties.
Can Tho police are investigating the incident.

Four people escaped death from a collision on Nha Be River, HCM City April 11. According to eye witnesses at the scene, a 490 ton barge, carrying 350 cubic meters of sand, was traveling up the confluence of Nha Be and Soai Rap when the 11,000 ton Vien Dong 3, travelling from the opposite direction, hit the barge. The accident happened at around 1:40 a.m. when a barge hit the Binh Loi Railway Bridge on the country’s outdated rail line. A timber factory in Can Tho that burned down early Saturday morning has reportedly caused losses worth more than VND10 billion (US$526,300).
