Le Nguyen Khang and his staff in HCM City have successfully produced a wood car, the first of its kind in Vietnam.
Construction of the open-top car which is 4.6 metres long and 1.8 metres wide started in April last year, he said.
High-tech parts of the car such as engine, gearbox, chassis, transmission system, and steering wheel which were imported from BMW German automaker, while other parts were manually made of wood by themselves.
Khang named the car “Achilles”, which he said can safely run up to 60 km/h and be used in restaurants, hotels, golf courses, and tourist resorts.
He expects to sell the car at US$25,000-26,000 and all the money will go to charities.

Over the past 15 years, the global trade of wood chips has risen dramatically by almost 75%, mainly because of major expansion of pulp capacity in China. Vietnam has led the Southeast Asia in wood exports and been listed in the world's top ten exporters after 15 years, when the country's export turnover was barely tens of millions of US dollar per year compared to billions of US dollar in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Earnings from wood exports are estimated to exceed 3.77 USD billion for the first nine months of this year, up 12 percent on 2012 figures, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). The furniture and wood products industry is experiencing a rebound with many producers receiving more orders at higher prices this year.
