Six schoolgirls drown after birthday outing to Red River

HA NOI — Six schoolgirls drowned in the Hong (Red) River in Me Linh District’s Trang Viet Commune last Friday.
The victims, all 11 years old, and five other schoolgirls, were reported to have gone swimming after a birthday party, but did not know how to swim.

Police in Me Linh District worked with local authorities to recover the bodies of the dead girls. Further investigations are being made.

Local authorities have provided families of the victims with VND8 million ($400) in aid.

On the same day, police in Soc Son District said a man had drowned after jumping into the Cau River after being chased by people.

Two primary pupils in central Ha Tinh Province also drowned in the Hoi River in Cam Xuyen District after going to see a boat race. — VNS
