State President Nguyen Minh Triet met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba at UN headquarters in New York on September 21 (Hanoi time).
During a meeting with Ban Ki-moon, Mr Triet praised the UN’s efforts and Mr Ban’s contribution to maintaining peace and security in the world as well the active support for developing countries.
He applauded the UN organising the summit to review the MDGs and affirmed that the summit’s success will motivate countries to achieve the set goals in 2015.
He thanked the UN for its support and said that Vietnam will continue to work alongside the UN, including implementing “One UN” initiative.
Mr Ban said Vietnam is a bright example in implementing MDGs and promoting “One UN” initiative.
At the meeting, the two sides also discussed Mr Ban’s visit to Vietnam to attend the ASEAN-UN summit.
Further promoting relations with Germany and Namibia
State President Nguyen Minh Triet has expressed his satisfaction with the fine co-operation between Vietnam and Germany in many fields, including investment, trade, education and vocational training, during a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The two leaders spoke highly of the co-operation in ogranising a series of economic, cultural and sporting events for “Germany Year in Vietnam” and “Vietnam Year in Germany” to mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.
They affirmed to boost partnerships for development of the two countries and to strengthen coordination in international forums, including the UN. Ms Merkel said that Germany wants to join more in big economic projects in Vietnam. She praised Vietnam’s successful role as ASEAN president, contributing to peace, stability, co-operation and development in the region.
Mr Triet invited Ms Merkel to visit Vietnam and she happily accepted the invitation.
Namibia hopes that Vietnam will help the country develop agriculture, said Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba at a meeting with Mr Triet.
The two leaders agreed to foster co-operation in multilateral forums under framework of the UN to create a world of justice, peace and co-operation for development.
Mr Pohamba also happily accepted an invitation to visit Vietnam at his convenience.
On the same day, President Triet attended an awards ceremony for bio-diversification by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Vietnam’s Phu An bamboo village project in Ben Cat district, Binh Duong province was one of 25 winning projects.
