The country’s first football league for children aged 6-14 kicked off at Xuan La stadium in Hanoi on February 22, attracting pupils from some of the most prominent Vietnamese and international schools in Hanoi as well as a number of independent teams. A total of 18 teams have registered for the first season of the Hanoi Youth Football League (HYFL), which will run between February and June this year. “The youth football league will enable children to learn about fair play and companionship and also provide a cultural exchange,” said Dutch Ambassador Joop Scheffers. Based on the European model of youth competitions, the league will oversee at least 40 matches per year, organize a knockout competition cup and contribute to the development of quality football in Vietnam. The HYFL will comprise of three age groups: under-8, under-10, and under-14, with the first three youth champions to be announced in June. The tournament is sponsored by the Ly Club, and the Dutch and German Embassies in Hanoi.
