Bird flu and foot-and-mouth diseases have hit some localities, according to the Veterinary Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on February 5. Ca Mau province on February 3 discovered a new outbreak of the disease in a flock of 950 ducks which had not been vaccinated in Tan Loc Bac commune, Thoi Binh district. Some 300 ducks recently became sick and 25 died. Until now, Ca Mau has had two communes, Thoi Binh and Tran Van Thoi, infected with the disease. So far, the three provinces of Ca Mau, Soc Trang and Nghe An have been hit by the avian flu within less than 21 days. The Veterinary Department has confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in northern Hoa Binh province. Livestock, including 2 cows and 24 buffaloes in Cun Pheo commune, Mai Chau district, tested positive for the virus. As of February 5, the country has had four provinces infected with foot-and-mouth disease: Long An (less than 19 days), Kon Tum, Son La and Hoa Binh (all less than 21 days). Effective measures are being taken to curb the spread of the disease in these provinces.
