Việt Nam asserts that dealing with climate change requires great efforts not only from the State, people but also civil organizations.
At the Conference “Climate change and role of civil social organizations” held on September 11 in Hà Nội, many agreed that it is necessary to establish a network of civil social organizations to mobilize the entire society to take part in this global work. The initiative to found such a network was presented at the conference.
Mr. Nguyễn Hữu Ninh, Vietnamese scientist in the international group with a climate change study winning the Nobel prize in 2007, stated that Việt Nam should make full use of its internal strength to address its own climate change issues. In the near future, “we must boost up afforestation and environmental protection to reduce negative impacts caused by climate change”, suggested Mr. Ninh.
According to Mr. Nguyễn Mạnh Cường, acting director of the Social Research Institute, head of the International Cooperation Department of the Việt Nam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA), “VUSTA wants to set up a common forum for its members to exchange information and raise the awareness of climate change.” He added that VUSTA members, governmental agencies, mass organizations, international organizations and donors should closely work together to resolve national-level issues.
