Court jails 27 for gambling The people's court in Cao Bang Province yesterday sent 27 people to prison for organised gambling. According to the court reports, on January 10, 2014, the Cao Bang police raided a guest room in the province and found four people engaging in illegal gambling. They also seized VND742 million (US$34,500) in cash from the site. Further investigations showed that the four persons were part of a larger gambling network that also organised gambling in the province from October 2013 to January 2014. The gambling network comprised 27 people, who received prison terms varying from one to six years. Several other persons were given probation. According to the Criminal Code, gambling is illegal in Viet Nam. Fishing boat rescued near Truong Sa A fishing boat and its 13 crew members were rescued at sea near Viet Nam's Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands after sending an SOS on Wednesday. The boat's crew belongs to Ly Son Island's An Hai Commune in the central province of Quang Ngai. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, head of the An Hai Commune Fishing Union, confirmed yesterday that the union had received an SOS from fishing boat QNg 96156 TS, which was stranded off the island of Thuyen Chai in the Truong Sa Islands of Khanh Hoa Province. Other fishing boats nearby failed to approach the boat due to big waves and the rough sea. However, ship HQ561 from Navy Zone 4 was able to tow the fishing boat to anchor on Thuyen Chai Island. The sea around the Truong Sa Islands has been choppy over the last few days with 3-4m high waves. Six fishermen rescued from sinking ship Two fishing boats from Quang Tri Province rescued six fishermen from Da Nang off the coast of Thua Thien – Hue Province yesterday, as well as towed their sinking ship. The Da Nang's Coastal Information Radio Station said yesterday that the fishing boat, DNA 90388TS, was half submerged in the waters off Thua Thien Hue Province on Saturday. As soon as receiving an SOS reporting the sinking ship, the fishing trawler QT 90099 TS rescued the six fishermen, before another boat, QT 90255 TS, towed the sinking ship to port. Crackdown on smugglers creates border control turmoil A crackdown on smugglers has created turmoil at Vietnam-China border crossings, notably at Mong Cai Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province, which is being flooded with people going back and forth between the two countries as gangs probe for weak spots in border control. Officials said Mong Cai Border Gate processed 10,000 people on December 6. Korea supports E-learning for National Economic and Technical College

(CPV) - The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Samsung Electronics on November 12 handed over the project of improvement of capacity and education environment to the National Economic and Technical College (NETC) in Hanoi - a Public Private Partnership of KOICA. Accordingly, some of USD145,000 spent for the construction of a KOICA-Samsung E-learning center with installed hardware and software from July to November 2014. The project is a cooperation result proposed and coordinated by volunteer Been Jae Man rendering service at NETC. Teachers and students from NETC now have chance to improve their professional skills. Besides, this College, located in Hanoi's suburb Gia Lam district, has also developed an E-learning project and submitted to its managing agency, Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA) for the approval. Given the current serious climate change, public - private partnership (PPP) investment form is expected to lure more investment in the agriculture sector as prices of agricultural products will increase and stay high in the years to come, the Vietnam Business Forum Magazine (VBF) reported. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat also said that the results of PPP projects made him expect a sharp rise in PPP in agriculture in the near future. According to the minister, Vietnam is one out of 11 countries in the world to pilot PPP in agriculture. Central Steering Committee worked with Quang Ngai


​In the morning of April 23rd, Mr. Nguyen Van Bien, Deputy Chairman of Vietnam Cooperative Alliance, representing the Central Steering Committee met with Quang Ngai provincial Steering Committee of National Target Program on building the new rural areas. As reported, so far, the National Target Program on new rural building in Quang Ngai has achieved lots of positive results. 19 subjects and 209 production development models have been approved and implemented, raising incomes for people in the province. Vietnam urged to play greater role in global partnership

(VOV) - Middle-income countries (MICs) should play a greater role in the global partnership based on sharing experiences in the development process and advantages of each nation. The statement was made by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung at the first high-level meeting of the Global Alliance for Effective Development Cooperation in Mexico on April 16. Dung affirmed that Vietnam agreed with the meeting's joint statement that called on development partners to adopt a new approach in funding and cooperative policies of MICs. Dung stated that Vietnam has been listed among MICs with an economic scale of nearly US$154 billion and an average income of US$1,700 per capita, integrated deeper into the regional and international economy with an annual trade growth rate of over 20%. US Senator begins Vietnam visit President Pro Tempore of the US Senate Patrick Leahy arrived in Hanoi on April 16, beginning his five-day official visit to Vietnam, which aims at further developing the two countries' bilateral ties.
