Downtown flower street to feature rural beauty This year’s flower street in celebration of the New Year will be organized on Ham Nghi Boulevard in HCMC’s District 1, featuring Vietnam’s rural beauty and its modernization seen through the development of a metro system, which is now under construction in the city. Ham Nghi Flower Boulevard measuring 510 meters in length will be divided into three sections, namely Hao khi Viet Nam (Vietnam’s spirit), Ban sac Viet Nam (Vietnam’s identity) and Vinh quang Viet Nam (Vietnam’s glory). The first section will be highlighted by the image of three goats in the Year of the Goat, decorated with greenery and huge rocks. The next one will manifest the beauty of tranquil Vietnamese villages with cottages and paddy fields and the final part will show the country’s modernization highlighted by the metro system. Russian festival on its way The Russian Cultural Days 2013 will be held from November 11-17 in Ha Noi, HCM City and Binh Duong Province by the culture ministries of Viet Nam and Russia. Activities consist of art performances, photo exhibitions and Russian Film Days which will screen Russian contemporary feature movies such as My Dad is Baryshnikov, I'll be Around, My Boyfriend is an Angel and White Tiger. As scheduled, a splendid art performance will open the event which takes place on November 12 at the Ha Noi Opera House. The art performance will also be organised at HCM City's Municipal Theatre on November 15 and at the Binh Duong Cultural Centre the following day. Foreign embassies join Hanoi marathon for peace About 200 foreign athletes representing 29 Hanoi-based embassies and international organisations have registered to participate in the Hanoi Moi (New Hanoi) newspaper's annual open marathon. In an October 1 press briefing, race organisers said its 40th iteration is expected to attract 1,200 competitors from 80 of the capital city's districts, universities, and colleges. The marathon, as well as promoting peace, will mark the 59th anniversary of Hanoi Liberation Day (October 10), the 14th anniversary of Hanoi's UNESCO City for Peace status, and the 56th anniversary of New Hanoi newspaper's inaugural edition. "The reality shows that in times when the general economy is going through a downturn, people reduce spending. Hence, high-class shopping centres with costly products will not be top choice." Ta Thi Phuong, a salesgirl at Hikosen Cara shop in the Parkson Landmark 72, told VIR that her shop was busier than normal with the week of children, which fell on June 1, bringing in more shoppers. However, normally very few customers drop by her shop as Vietnam's economic woes have seen consumers tighten their belts. Electricity supply sufficient for summer The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said that the power supply will be sufficient for this summer due to high water levels and more power projects to be put into operation. The water levels at Hoa Binh Hydropower plant reached 106 metres, much higher than previous years. The current water levels at Son La Hydropower have risen to 202 metres. According to statistics from Vietnam Electricity (EVN), in early 2012, it began operating 2 turbines, with a total capacity of 176.5MW. The 500 kV Son La - Hiep Hoa power grid along with other new power project that joined the power grid in March have provided sufficient power for northern provinces. EVN has plans to put the turbine 5 in Son La Hydropower Plant into operation, complete the building of turbine 2 in Dong Nai 4 Plant and get turbine 2 in Kanak Plant online.
